ABOUT THE DESTINATION
Tarvisio closes Italy’s north-eastern corner: a town of 5,000 wedged between the Carnic Alps, the Karawanks and the Julian Alps, where Italy, Austria and Slovenia meet in a single forest. Its roots are older than Italy itself — a Bamberg exclave from 1007, Habsburg until 1918, a shopping Mecca on the Venice–Vienna road — and its landscape is the grandest in Friuli-Venezia Giulia: the two Fusine lakes under Mangart’s north face, the turquoise Predil lake with its mine history, the pilgrimage village on Monte Lussari, and Italy’s largest old-growth forest. Skiing here is a religion (the 2003 Winter Universiade, the 2007 World Cup women’s downhill), and summer hiking and cycling carry the Alpe-Adria spirit.

HISTORY & CULTURE
The Story Behind the Place
Tarvisio’s story is the story of the border it guards: on the trade road across the Alps to Venice since Roman times, the Canal Valley was granted to the new Diocese of Bamberg by Henry II in 1007 and remained its southern exclave until 1758, when the bishop sold it to Empress Maria Theresa. Habsburg Carinthia developed the ore mines and ironworks of Fusine and Cave del Predil, and the 1879 imperial railway turned Tarvisio into a junction on the Vienna–Venice line. Italy took the valley in 1919; the Nazi-era Options of 1939 drove many German- and Slovene-speaking families to Carinthia, and the postwar Rag Market made the town a shopping legend until Schengen and the euro. The mine closed in 1991; tourism and the Alpe-Adria idea inherited the crossroads.

NATURE & WILDLIFE
The Living Landscape
The Tarvisio forest — Italy’s largest old-growth woodland — covers the whole valley between the Carnic Alps and the Karawanks, home to red deer, roe deer, lynx and a small bear population that crosses freely into Slovenia and Austria. The two Fusine lakes fill a glacial cirque under Mangart’s 2,677 m north face, among the largest erratic boulders in the Alps; the Predil basin sits at 969 m with the Cinque Punte above it. The Saisera valley keeps its WWI-era meadows roadless, and marmots, chamois and ibex live on the high ridges. The whole area is a Natura 2000 site.
