ABOUT THIS ITINERARY
Zavidovići is a town that rewards two days rather than one, because its two sides — the river town and the upland behind it — are different in character and are best taken at different paces. The first day is the town and the riverside: a self-guided walking loop through the centre, the historic Krivaja administration building and the Krivaja–Bosna confluence, followed by a short circuit by car to the two separate stone-sphere sites at Grab and Podubravlje. The second day is the Tajan upland: a nature visit to the protected massif from the Kamenica recreation area, with the Forest Creek golf and lodge resort as an optional recreation alternative for visitors who prefer a rest day or a round on the course. This itinerary threads the two days together, links every stop to the canonical records, and keeps the walking sections and the transfers that need a vehicle clearly apart.
OVERVIEW
The route at a glance
The route follows the two sides of Zavidovići in turn. Day 1 begins on foot in the centre, with the Krivaja administration building and the riverside walk to the Krivaja–Bosna confluence, the natural anchor of the town. In the afternoon the route leaves the walking loop for the short drive to the two separate stone-sphere sites — the gathered park at Grab and the single large formation at Podubravlje — which are reached by road and are not part of the central walk. Day 2 is a full day in the Tajan upland, beginning at the Kamenica recreation area and shaped around the routes that are open and the local information available; the Forest Creek resort is offered as an optional alternative for visitors who want the recreation side of the upland rather than the wilderness side.
The whole of Day 1 morning is on foot and compact. The afternoon of Day 1 needs a car or arranged transfer for the two stone-sphere sites, and the whole of Day 2 needs a car or arranged transfer for the Tajan upland and for the optional Forest Creek alternative. One optional stop is marked for visitors who want the resort instead of the nature visit, but the core itinerary stands without it.
THE SCHEDULE
Day by day
The town, the rivers and the stone spheres
A walkable morning through the town centre, the Krivaja building and the Krivaja–Bosna confluence, with an afternoon circuit by car to the two separate stone-sphere sites at Grab and Podubravlje.
- 09:00
Walk Zavidovići's town and riverside
2–3 hoursBegin on foot in the centre of Zavidovići. The self-guided walking loop ties the town together: the streets of the centre, the historic Krivaja administration building read for its heritage exterior, and the riverside path to the Krivaja–Bosna confluence, the meeting of the two rivers that gives the town its position. The walk is short and flat, on paved streets and riverside paths, and outdoor areas can generally be visited without booking. The Krivaja building is described for its exterior; check locally what, if anything, can be visited inside. This is the walking section of the day — no transport is needed.
- 12:30
The historic Krivaja administration building
30–45 minPause at the historic Krivaja administration building in the centre, the heritage landmark of the town’s timber past. Read the building for its architecture and its place in the streetscape — the visible record of the wood-processing enterprise that shaped modern Zavidovići. The building is described for its exterior; no claim is made that an interior museum or tour is currently available, so check locally what can be seen inside before planning around an interior visit. This stop is on foot, part of the morning walk.
- 14:30
Stone Spheres Park at Grab
1 hourAfter a riverside lunch, leave the walking loop for the short drive east to the Stone Spheres Park at Grab, the principal place to see the rounded stone formations of the area. A concentration of near-spherical stones of varying size is gathered here in a rural park, walked among and examined at close quarters, and presented as a local geological curiosity without a single settled explanation of its origin. The park is an open outdoor site; check current local access before a dedicated visit. This stop needs a car or arranged transport; it is not part of the central walking loop.
- 16:00
Giant Stone Sphere at Podubravlje
45–60 minContinue by car to the village of Podubravlje, a short drive south of Zavidovići, to see the second, complementary stone-sphere site: a single large rounded stone formation in its village setting, the counterpart to the concentration at Grab. The two sites are normally visited together as the two faces of the Zavidovići stone-sphere phenomenon, and this completes the circuit. The sphere is an outdoor feature; check current local access before a dedicated visit. This stop needs road transport and is not part of the central walking loop.
GETTING AROUND
The morning is on foot along paved streets and riverside paths, with no transport needed within the centre. The afternoon needs a car or arranged transfer for the two stone-sphere sites at Grab and Podubravlje, both of which are reached by road and are not part of the central walking loop. Wear comfortable walking shoes for the morning.
EAT & DRINK
Begin with a light breakfast at your accommodation or a café in the centre. Pause for a riverside lunch in Zavidovići before the afternoon drive to the spheres, and finish with a Bosnian coffee in the centre on your return. Meal stop names are not prescribed — choose from the town-centre and riverside options available on the day.
The Tajan upland — nature (or the resort alternative)
A full day in the Tajan natural monument from the Kamenica recreation area, with the Forest Creek golf and lodge resort as an optional recreation alternative for visitors who prefer it.
- 09:00
Tajan Natural Monument from Kamenica
Full dayDrive south from Zavidovići into the Tajan upland and begin at the Kamenica recreation area, the developed access point and natural start of a Tajan visit. Shape the day around the routes that are open and the local information available: the forested karst of the massif, the Gostović river and its waterfalls, and the Mašica lake and canyon, with the cave systems reached only with local guidance, conditions and the right equipment. Tajan is a full-day proposition, and not every feature within the monument can be reached in a single visit — the coordinates mark the visitor information and start point rather than the summit. Wear sturdy footwear and carry water, layers and a map or local directions; check upland weather and access before setting out. This stop needs a car or arranged transport.
Optional stops
Forest Creek Golf & Lodge Resort
Half to full dayVisitors who prefer the recreation side of the upland to the wilderness side can spend the day at the Forest Creek Golf & Lodge Resort, a golf and lodge facility in the wooded upland south of Zavidovići, in the direction of the Tajan area. The resort is a private, operated facility: visitor access, bookings, equipment hire and the facilities available are all subject to confirmation with the operator, and no opening hours, green fees or schedules are stated here. Arrange the visit in advance. This stop needs road transport and is offered as an alternative to the Tajan nature visit — the core itinerary stands without it.
GETTING AROUND
The whole of Day 2 needs a car or arranged transfer for the Tajan upland, and for the optional Forest Creek alternative, both of which are reached by road south of Zavidovići. There is no walking section of the day that does not begin with a drive. Wear sturdy footwear and carry water and layers for the upland.
EAT & DRINK
Take a packed lunch and water for a Tajan day, as the upland has no guaranteed food stops; eat breakfast in Zavidovići before the drive and return to the town for the evening. For the Forest Creek alternative, confirm dining arrangements with the operator when booking.
SEASONAL NOTES
When to go
Summer days (July and August) are warm, so treat the slowest hours around midday as a shade pause and save the exposed parts of the Tajan upland for the cooler morning and afternoon. May to June and September to October give the most comfortable walking weather, the greenest rivers and softer light in the Bosna valley. Daylight varies widely through the year, so check the sunset time for the day you visit rather than relying on a fixed hour. The town walk and the stone-sphere sites are enjoyable year-round, conditions permitting; the Tajan upland is best from late spring to early autumn, and its access routes and cave features are subject to conditions and local guidance. The Forest Creek resort’s operating season is set by the operator — confirm before planning around it.
