Explore Bosnia & Herzegovina’s five World Heritage properties

Bosnia and Herzegovina has five properties on the UNESCO World Heritage List: two historic bridge ensembles, the transnational stećci necropolises, one component of Europe’s serial primeval beech forests, and Vjetrenica Cave. Some properties are single visitor places while others are serial properties spread across several countries and component sites.

WHEN TO GO

  • The urban bridge ensembles of Mostar and Višegrad can be visited year-round, though summer afternoons are hot and crowded.
  • Open-air stećci necropolises such as Radimlja and Dugo Polje are most comfortable outside the extreme midday heat of July and August; check weather before exposed plateau visits.
  • Vjetrenica Cave access and any authorised approach to the strict Prašuma Janj reserve depend on current local information, season and conditions — confirm before travelling.

WHAT TO CARRY

  • Comfortable walking footwear with grip for old stone bridges, cobblestones and uneven necropolis ground.
  • Sun protection and water for exposed open-air necropolises and plateau sites.
  • A light rain or wind layer for mountain and karst settings where weather changes quickly.
  • Warm layers for cave conditions inside Vjetrenica, where temperatures are cool year-round.
  • No technical or climbing equipment is implied or required for any property in this guide.

PLAN THE ROUTE

  • Distinguish single-site properties (the Mostar old bridge area, the Višegrad bridge, Vjetrenica Cave) from serial properties spread across multiple component sites and countries (stećci, primeval beech forests).
  • Verify current access, opening hours and any entry arrangements locally before a dedicated visit; do not rely on fixed schedules.
  • Use the canonical destination and attraction pages for detailed context rather than treating this guide as a complete site inventory.
  • Never assume that a serial property’s entire surrounding destination is inscribed — only the named component sites carry World Heritage status.

SAFETY

  • Respect barriers, fences and protected surfaces at every property; these are inscribed cultural and natural heritage sites.
  • Never climb on, sit on, touch, mark or rub the stećci tombstones at Radimlja or Dugo Polje — they are fragile medieval monuments.
  • Enter Vjetrenica Cave only through authorised visitor access; never attempt independent or unguided cave entry.
  • Do not enter Prašuma Janj independently or treat its central coordinate as a trailhead, parking place or directions destination — it is a strict nature reserve.
  • Follow current local guidance, Leave No Trace behaviour and any reserve or park rules at every site.
