ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Beside the basilica stands one of the oldest baptisteries in Christendom — an octagon of the 5th century (its shape echoing the “eighth day” of resurrection) with its original mosaic floor and a font at the centre where converts of the whole northeastern Adriatic once entered the faith. The South Hall (Südhalle) links it to the basilica, another mosaic-floored hall of the Theodorian complex, and its walls are studded with pagan Roman sarcophagi reused by the new religion — the old world literally holding up the new.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The baptistery belongs to the great 5th-century rebuilding under Bishop Chromatius, when Aquileia was the metropolitan church of the Adriatic and its bishops were spoken of as patriarchs. The octagonal plan influenced baptisteries across the region; the complex of basilica, baptistery and halls is the most complete surviving episcopal ensemble of the early Christian world.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Together with the basilica floor, the baptistery complex makes Aquileia the single best place in the West to understand Christianity’s first centuries as an imperial, public religion.
