ABOUT THIS ITINERARY

The essential Aquileia day: the mosaic floor before the coaches arrive, the forum and the river port at midday, the museum in the afternoon heat, and the ride or drive across the lagoon margin to Grado — the town the refugees of Aquileia built — for a swim and a seafood dinner.

OVERVIEW

The route at a glance

The itinerary follows the city’s own story outward: the Christian basilica at its heart, the pagan city around it, the port that explained its wealth, and finally the lagoon that received its people when Attila burned everything else.

THE SCHEDULE

Day by day

Day 1

Mosaics, ruins, museum — and the lagoon

  1. Morning

Patriarchal Basilica — the mosaic floor

    1.5–2 hours

Arrive at opening time and walk the 760 m² floor of the 4th-century basilica — Jonah, the fishermen, the donor portraits — then the Crypt of the Frescoes and the Crypt of the Excavations below.

  2. Midday

    Baptistery, forum and river port

    1.5 hours

The octagonal baptistery and South Hall beside the basilica, then the forum colonnades and the flat walk west to the excavated quays of the Roman fluvial port on the Natissa.

  3. Afternoon

    National Archaeological Museum

    1–1.5 hours

The glass collection, the banquet stele, the lapidarium courtyard and the Roman river barge — the daily life of the dead city under one roof, and air-conditioned in summer.

  4. Late afternoon

Cycle or drive to Grado across the lagoon

    2–3 hours

Take the flat cycle path south across the lagoon margin to Grado — swim off the beaches, eat seafood on the old-town canals, and return in the evening light with the Alps behind you.
