ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Lukomir is one of the highest and best-known traditional highland villages in Bosnia & Herzegovina, set on the southern edge of Bjelašnica at the head of the Rakitnica canyon. Its stone houses with their wooden shingle roofs, its summer katuns and its open view over the gorge make it the most distinctive settlement on the mountain and a celebrated destination for summer walkers. The transhumant highland way of life that once shaped the Dinaric mountains is still visible here in the warmer months, when the pastures are grazed and the village is lived in. Access to Lukomir is seasonal: the high, rough road that reaches it may be unsuitable or unavailable in winter, and a visit is normally a snow-free-season undertaking. The coordinate marks the village itself.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Lukomir is a traditional highland village of the Dinaric karst, whose stone houses and seasonal pastoral life reflect the transhumant pattern that once characterised much of the high Bjelašnica–Visočica country. The village sits at the southern rim of the mountain above the Rakitnica canyon, and its economy has long been tied to the summer pastures rather than to the lowland towns. In recent decades Lukomir has become one of the best-known highland villages in the country, visited in the warmer months for its architecture, its setting and its canyon views.
