ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Rakitnica canyon is the deep, wild gorge of the Rakitnica river that separates Bjelašnica from the neighbouring mountain of Visočica, one of the most rugged landscapes in the country. It is a canyon landscape viewed from established approaches and rim viewpoints — most accessibly from the rim above Lukomir — rather than an easy casual canyon walk. The gorge is a serious natural feature with steep walls and difficult terrain, and any closer exploration demands experience, suitable equipment and current local guidance; it is not undertaken as a casual walk. No single location is given here, because the canyon is a large landscape feature with multiple access points rather than one visitor point, and the destination coordinates are not a substitute for a rim viewpoint or an approach.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The Rakitnica canyon is a limestone gorge carved by the river of the same name between the Bjelašnica and Visočica massifs, a product of the same karst processes that shape the whole Dinaric range. It has long been one of the wildest corners of the highland country above Sarajevo, little touched by development, and it remains a landscape approached from its rim and its few established routes rather than crossed at will.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The rim view from above Lukomir — the most accessible view of the gorge, seen from the canyon edge near the village.
The depth of the gorge — the sheer limestone walls that drop from the highland rim to the river below.
The wildness of the landscape — the rugged, undeveloped character that makes the canyon one of the country’s most dramatic natural features.
The Bjelašnica–Visočica divide — the canyon as the natural boundary between the two massifs.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The Rakitnica canyon is the wild natural fact of the southern Bjelašnica country and the setting that gives Lukomir its dramatic edge. For a visitor it is a landscape to view from established rim viewpoints rather than a casual walk, and the reason the southern side of the mountain feels so remote.
