ROUTE
A circular mountain day on Bjelašnica from Umoljani over the Obalj high ground to the highland village of Lukomir, returning above the Rakitnica canyon toward Studeni Potok.
ABOUT THIS ROUTE
The Umoljani–Lukomir Loop is a circular mountain walking day on the southern side of Bjelašnica, the Olympic mountain above Sarajevo. It begins and ends at the high-pasture village of Umoljani, climbs onto the Obalj high ground, descends to the traditional highland village of Lukomir on the canyon rim, and returns above the Rakitnica canyon toward the Studeni Potok springs and back to Umoljani. It is a recognised marked route rather than a casual valley stroll — a moderate mountain day of open ridgeline, high pasture and canyon-rim walking that earns its views with steady climbing and changing terrain. The route is at its best under stable snow-free conditions, when the pastures are green and the canyon rim is clear; outside that window the high ground can be unsuitable and the route demands current local judgement.
The loop sets out from Umoljani, the gentler high-pasture village on the eastern side of the mountain, and climbs toward the Obalj ridge — the high ground that separates the eastern pastures from the southern canyon country. From the ridge the walking opens out into the long views that characterise the southern Bjelašnica, before the route descends to Lukomir, the stone highland village perched on the rim of the Rakitnica canyon and the cultural high point of the southern mountain. The return leg follows established ground above the Rakitnica canyon — a landscape viewed from the rim rather than entered — toward the Studeni Potok springs and back to Umoljani, closing the circuit. The canyon is a dramatic gorge viewed from established approaches above; the route does not descend into or enter the canyon. The day is a moderate mountain undertaking: steady climbing, open and exposed high ground, and terrain that changes with the weather. Treat the stated duration as typical rather than guaranteed.
