ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Beside the Una at Bosanska Krupa stand reconstructed watermills, the mills that once ground the grain of the surrounding valley and tied the town’s life to the river. The Una’s steady flow made it a natural milling river, and the mills were part of the working economy of the town for generations before they fell out of use. The reconstructed mills now stand as a heritage feature on the riverside, a visible record of the river’s working past and a quiet part of the waterside walk. For a visitor they are the link between the natural river — the islands, the bridges, the swimming — and the human one, the town that lived by grinding grain beside the water.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Watermills on the Una were a feature of Bosanska Krupa for centuries, using the river’s current to turn the stones that ground the grain of the Krajina valley. As industrial milling replaced them in the modern period the old mills fell into disuse and decay, and the surviving structures were later reconstructed as a heritage record of the river economy. They stand today as part of the riverside landscape, preserved rather than working, a reminder of the period when the Una was a working river as well as a natural one.
