ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Bihać is the principal town of the far northwest of Bosnia & Herzegovina, set on the clear, fast Una river in the historical region known as the Krajina. It is an old border town — medieval walls, a Gothic church turned mosque, a stone captain’s tower — built around a river so green and immediate that it shapes almost every street in the centre. Bihać is also the natural gateway to Una National Park, which begins just south of the city and protects the finest stretch of the river. For most visitors it is the base from which the park is explored, and a worthwhile town in its own right: compact, walkable, and the place where the Krajina’s river-and-frontier character is most legible.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

Bihać was founded as a fortified royal free town in the medieval period, guarding a crossing of the Una on the frontier between the Hungarian crown and the Ottoman state. It fell to the Ottomans in 1592, when its Gothic church was converted into the Fethija Mosque, and remained an Ottoman border town for centuries before passing to Austro-Hungarian and then Yugoslav rule. In 1942 it was the seat of the short-lived Bihać Republic and the first session of AVNOJ. Today it is the principal town of the far northwest and the gateway to Una National Park.

Practical Information

Getting There

Bihać is reached primarily by road and intercity bus; check current bus schedules before travel. The historic centre and the Una riverfront can be explored on foot. A car or arranged transfer is useful for Ostrožac Castle and Una National Park. Štrbački Buk is roughly 33 km from Bihać and generally about an hour by road, depending on access and road conditions.

What to Wear & Bring

Comfortable walking shoes, modest clothing when entering Fethija Mosque, BAM cash for small local services, and seasonal sun, rain or warm layers.

Accessibility & Mobility

Much of the central riverside loop is relatively level. Visitors should verify current step-free access at the mosque and museums. Ostrožac Castle has uneven surfaces and partially restored areas and should not be described as step-free.
