ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Biljarda is the former residence of Petar II Petrović-Njegoš, the prince-bishop, poet and ruler of Montenegro whose epic The Mountain Wreath is the central work of Montenegrin literature. The building takes its name from the billiard table Njegoš is said to have brought here — the most famous piece of furniture in Montenegrin history — and it now houses a museum dedicated to his life, his writing and his rule. It is the town-house counterpart to the mountain mausoleum on Jezerski vrh: where the mausoleum holds his tomb and his panorama, Biljarda holds the domestic and political world of the ruler who built modern Montenegro’s cultural identity.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Biljarda was built in 1838 as the residence of Petar II Petrović-Njegoš, who ruled Montenegro as prince-bishop from 1830 to 1851. The building served as his court, his writing room and the administrative centre of his rule, and it was here that much of his literary and political work was done. After Njegoš’s death and the later move of his remains to the Lovćen mausoleum, the building became a museum dedicated to his life and work. It is distinct from the Njegoš Mausoleum on Jezerski vrh — the mausoleum is the tomb on the mountain, while Biljarda is the historic residence in the town — and the two should not be confused.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Biljarda is the place to meet Njegoš the ruler and the writer, rather than Njegoš the tomb on a mountain — the domestic and political setting of the figure who did more than any other to shape Montenegrin cultural identity. For a visitor it is the essential town counterpart to the Lovćen mausoleum, and the one site in Cetinje that ties the old capital directly to its foremost poet-ruler. Opening hours, room access and photography rules must be checked directly.
