ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE

The drive up Mount Lovćen from Cetinje to the Njegoš Mausoleum is the classic excursion from the old capital — a winding ascent through the wooded slopes of Lovćen National Park to the road’s end at Jezerski vrh, from where a stairway climbs to the mausoleum and its panorama. The drive itself is part of the experience: the road switchbacks up through black pine and beech, opening to views back over Cetinje and the Skadar plain, until the vegetation thins to karst at the top. It is the easiest way to reach the best viewpoint in Montenegro and the tomb of its foremost poet-ruler.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Good to know before you go

The road up Lovćen is paved and driveable in an ordinary car in the warmer months, with switchbacks and some narrow sections. The drive takes roughly 30–45 minutes from Cetinje to the parking area at the top, from where the stairway to the mausoleum is a steep climb of some 461 steps. A small entry fee is charged at the mausoleum. The road can be closed by snow in winter, so check conditions outside the summer months. Go on a clear day — the panorama is the whole point, and cloud spoils it.
