ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Pavlovac is the monastery at the end of a forest road: a single church of Saint Nicholas in a green fold of the mountain, founded by despot Stefan Lazarević around 1417 — the last great age of medieval Serbia — on the site of a Roman cemetery. The monastery was razed after the Ottoman conquest; its monks stayed through the 1690 Great Migration and were killed when the Turks burned the buildings. Rebuilt in the 20th century (fully restored 1990), it keeps the relics of those martyred monks in the foundations and the silence they died for. The church’s modest exterior hides a peaceful interior and a spring below the fold — this is the Kosmaj experience at its purest.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Despot Stefan built Pavlovac between 1415 and 1419 (the Church celebrates 1417) near his favourite hunting grounds; the despot’s letter to Ragusa of 1424 mentions the village beside it. After the despotate’s fall the Turks razed it; in 1690, as the Great Migration crossed the Sava, the monks who stayed were killed and the monastery burned. Ruins persisted to 1967; archaeological work, partial rebuilding and full restoration followed, with monks returning in 1990.
