ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
On the summit meadow stands one of the most striking of Yugoslavia’s monuments: a 35-metre concrete spire, split down the middle, its two halves leaning apart like a flame torn in two. Vojin Stojić’s 1979 memorial commemorates the Kosmaj Partisan Detachment — some 100 fighters who took to these woods in the summer of 1941 and were hunted down through the autumn; the monument’s break reads as the broken line of their retreat, its upthrust as the survival of the idea. The meadow around it is the mountain’s high point, 626 metres — the highest ground in the whole of the city of Belgrade — with views to both the capital and Šumadija’s ridges.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The Kosmaj Detachment formed in July 1941 and was largely destroyed by German anti-partisan operations that winter; survivors joined the main Partisan forces. The memorial, finished in 1979, belongs to the great wave of Yugoslav “spomenik” building — bold abstract forms marking the war’s geography — and has been carefully maintained since, drawing architecture tourists from across the world.
