ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Tresije is the mountain’s most accessible monastery: a whitewashed church and monastic house on the Tresije river, founded in the 14th–15th century and rebuilt many times — most recently in the 20th, after WWII damage. The church of Saint Nicholas is small and warm; the river fold around it is the Kosmaj of paintings. Above the valley in the woods stands Kastaljan, the third monastery — a ruin, abandoned and roofless, its walls in the beech roots: the mountain’s medieval past left exactly where the centuries dropped it.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Tresije was founded, by tradition, in the 14th century and restored under the Lazarević era; it ran through the Ottoman centuries as a small brotherhood, suffered in the wars of the 20th century, and lives again. Kastaljan’s abandonment is medieval — its stones went into village walls around it.

GOOD TO KNOW
Facts & Curiosities
Tresije is the oldest continuously living monastery on Kosmaj — over 600 years.
Kastaljan, the third Kosmaj monastery, has been a roofless ruin for centuries — the mountain’s medieval ghost.
All three Kosmaj monasteries stand within a 6 km radius — one of Serbia’s densest medieval landscapes.
The monasteries kept the mountain’s woods standing through every war — the forest is their legacy.
