ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The fortress crowns Kruja’s hill at 557 metres, its walls tracing the ridge above the plain. Inside stand the 1982 National Skanderbeg Museum — a dramatic modern building shaped like a fortress itself, its halls marching through the hero’s life from the 1443 seizure of Kruja to the field victories and the 25-year resistance — the Bektashi Teqe of Dollma with its ceiling sun-face, the remains of the Fatih mosque and minaret, a hammam and the ethnographic house. The museum’s rampart terrace is the view of the whole lowland: Tirana’s towers, the Durrës coast, and on clear days the mountains of Montenegro.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The fortress existed by the 5th–6th century; it watched the medieval Arberesh state and fell to the Ottomans in 1415. On 28 November 1443 Skanderbeg seized it by forged letter and raised the double-eagle flag — Albania’s flag to this day. As the League of Lezhë’s capital it defeated Murad II’s army in the great siege of 1450 and held through Mehmed II’s sieges of 1466 and 1467; ten years after Skanderbeg’s death, Mehmed finally took it in 1478 — the fortress’ resistance became the founding legend of Albanian statehood. The Communist state made it a “hero city”, and Pranvera Mjafta and Pirro Vaso’s museum building opened inside the walls in 1982.
