ABOUT THE DESTINATION
Durrës (Durazzo) is Albania’s second city and its oldest — founded as Epidamnos by Greek colonists in 627 BC, the start of the Via Egnatia to Constantinople, and still the country’s main port and beach town. Its great wonder sits unguarded among the houses: the Roman amphitheatre, the largest on the Balkan Peninsula, built under Trajan for 20,000 spectators and only discovered in 1966, with an early-Christian chapel mosaic in its galleries. Behind it rise the Byzantine walls and the Venetian tower; in front stretches the Adriatic promenade and the beach strip that draws half of Tirana every summer weekend.

HISTORY & CULTURE
The Story Behind the Place
Epidamnos (627 BC) became the Roman Dyrrachium, Adriatic terminus of the Via Egnatia and the landing point of Pompey’s and Caesar’s civil war — its walls withstood Caesar’s siege in 48 BC. Under the empire it grew its amphitheatre (early 2nd century, under Trajan); earthquakes in the 6th and 10th centuries buried it, and the medieval city shrank inside the Byzantine-Venetian walls. Ottoman centuries kept it a fishing port; the 20th century made it the kingdom’s main harbour — and the amphitheatre lay hidden until a December 1966 excavation found the arena among the houses. It was inscribed on Albania’s UNESCO tentative list in 1996.
