ABOUT THE DESTINATION
Kruja is the Albanian national story in one hillside town: the fortress where Skanderbeg raised the double-eagle flag in 1443 and held out against three full Ottoman sieges — 1450, 1466, 1467 — with garrisons of a few thousand, until Mehmed the Conqueror finally took it in 1478, ten years after the hero’s death. The National Skanderbeg Museum stands inside the walls today in its dramatic 1982 fortress-form building; the old bazaar below is the best-preserved Ottoman market street in Albania, all wooden shops of goldsmiths and felt-makers; and the terrace cafés at the castle gate hang over the plain — the Adriatic on clear days — 550 metres above the Tirana bustle.

HISTORY & CULTURE
The Story Behind the Place
Kruja was the centre of the Arberesh state before the Ottomans took it in 1415; its fortress (5th–6th century foundations at 557 m) became the springboard of national resistance when Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg — an Ottoman general who returned to his faith and his people — seized it with a forged sultan’s letter on 28 November 1443 and raised the red flag with the black double eagle. As capital of the League of Lezhë it withstood Murad II’s great siege of 1450 and Mehmed II’s sieges of 1466 and 1467; after Skanderbeg died in 1468 the fortress held until 1478. Under the Ottomans Kruja became a craft town famous for its bazaar; proclaimed a “hero city” by the Communist state, its museum opened in the fortress in 1982, and it remains Albania’s pilgrim-town of independence.
