ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The Široka čaršija is the town’s historic spine — the 19th-century trades street where the textile wealth built its houses; the Hisar hill above it keeps the oldest layer (the fortress remains) and the town’s best view. Between the two lies the grill town of today — the streets that smell of October ajvar and September grills.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The čaršija grew through the Ottoman era and the 19th-century textile boom — “Serbian Manchester”; the Hisar hill is the town’s ancient core (fortress remains, the Roman and medieval layers) turned into the park. The grill fame (the pljeskavica’s birthplace) came on top of the trade wealth.
