ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Vranje is Serbia’s southernmost town — the Ottoman-era quarter of the Biser Vranja (“the Pearl of Vranje”), the White Bridge (Beli most) over the Vranjska river (the town’s symbol and its love story), and the old houses where the merchant wealth of the Constantinople road built its courtyards. The town keeps a living tradition — the brass music, the cocek dance, the honey of the hills — and stands at the gate of the south: Skopje is 90 minutes, the Vranjska Banja’s hot springs are 10.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

Vranje grew on the great south road — the Ottoman era (held 1455–1878, among the longest holds in Serbia) made it the sandžak centre whose old quarter (the Biser Vranja) survives: the merchant houses, the Haji-mosque, the hammam. The White Bridge carries the town’s love story (the bridge built by the forbidding father — the tale every local tells). Liberation (1878) made it Serbian; the 20th century’s south road made it the border’s gate — the 1999 NATO damage and the recovery is recent memory. The brass tradition (the “trubači” of the south) keeps the town’s music famous.
