ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Sokobanja is Serbia’s beloved green spa: the thermal springs at the foot of the Sokolica mountain, the Moravica river’s willow walks through the town, the medieval Soko Grad fortress on the cliff above, and — on the horizon — the perfect pyramid of Mount Rtanj, the region’s most mysterious peak. The air (declared an “air spa” in the 19th century) draws the cure-seekers; the hikes draw the walkers; the fortress and the Bovan lake fill the days. It is the south’s easiest holiday town.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

The springs were known to the Romans (the baths’ foundations) and the medieval town grew under Soko Grad (the “falcon town”, 14th century); the Ottoman era left the town its hammam tradition. The modern spa began in 1837 — prince Miloš’s state took the springs, and Sokobanja became Serbia’s first state-organized spa; the “air spa” designation (1873, the doctors’ prescription) made its name. Soko Grad’s fortress keeps the town’s emblem; Rtanj’s pyramid keeps its mystery.
