ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Međugorje is a village in the municipality of Čitluk in Herzegovina, set among dry-stone vineyards and karst hills a short distance inland from Mostar. In June 1981 six local children reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary on a hillside above the village, and the reported visions continued over the following years, drawing growing numbers of pilgrims first from the region and then from across the Catholic world. The life of the place is organised around that pilgrimage: the parish church of Saint James, Apparition Hill (Podbrdo) where the reported visions began, and the steep Cross Mountain (Križevac) above the village. In 2019 the Holy See authorised official parish-organised pilgrimages to Međugorje, and in September 2024 the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith issued a Nihil obstat concerning the spiritual experience associated with Međugorje — a note that permits public devotion and recognises positive pastoral fruits, while not declaring the reported apparitions supernatural, authentic or a matter to be believed. For a visitor it is at once a religious site and a living Herzegovinian village, where faith, landscape and a remarkable modern history meet.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

Međugorje was an ordinary Herzegovinian wine-growing village in the municipality of Čitluk until June 1981, when six local children reported seeing the Virgin Mary on the hillside known as Podbrdo. The reported apparitions continued over the following years and attracted growing numbers of pilgrims, first from the region and then from across the Catholic world, transforming the village into a major international pilgrimage site. The local Franciscan parish of Saint James, established in 1892, became the centre of the devotion. The reported visions were long the subject of Church investigation. The concrete cross on Cross Mountain (Križevac) above the village predates the reported apparitions: it was completed and the first Mass on the summit was celebrated in March 1934, marking the 1900th anniversary of the Crucifixion.

What to Wear & Bring

Sturdy shoes with grip for the steep, rocky hill climbs; a hat and water for the exposed ascents in warm weather; modest clothing for the church and the hills, which are active places of worship; and some cash (BAM), as small cafés and offerings often prefer cash.

Accessibility & Mobility

The parish church and the village lanes are relatively flat and reachable with modest effort. Apparition Hill and Cross Mountain are steep, rocky and exposed climbs on loose stone with little shade, and they are not accessible to wheelchair users or visitors with limited mobility. Assess each part of the site against your needs, and check current access locally before a dedicated visit.
