ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Cross Mountain, known as Križevac, is the highest hill above Međugorje, crowned by an 8-metre concrete cross and climbed by pilgrims via a steep Way of the Cross marked by bronze reliefs of the stations. The cross was completed and the first Mass on the summit was celebrated in March 1934, long before the reported apparitions of 1981, as a parish memorial marking the 1900th anniversary of the Crucifixion. The climb is steeper, longer and more demanding than Apparition Hill, with loose stone and little shade, and it is the separate, demanding extension of a Međugorje visit rather than its principal hill objective. The reward is the finest view over the village, the church, Apparition Hill and the Herzegovinian karst plain. The exact coordinates of a single canonical visitor point are not independently verified here, so the summit is left unlocated on the map; the path begins at the foot of the hill beyond the village.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The concrete cross on the summit of Križevac was completed and the first Mass on the summit was celebrated in March 1934, erected by the parish of Međugorje to mark the 1900th anniversary of the Crucifixion. The Way of the Cross with its bronze reliefs of the stations was added later, and the mountain became a place of pilgrim prayer. After the reported apparitions of 1981 the climb took on a further devotional life, but the cross itself predates the reported events by nearly half a century. The reported apparitions have been the subject of long Church investigation; in September 2024 the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith issued a Nihil obstat concerning the spiritual experience associated with Međugorje, permitting public devotion and recognising positive pastoral fruits without declaring the reported apparitions supernatural, authentic or obligatory belief.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Cross Mountain is the demanding counterpart to Apparition Hill — a steeper, longer climb crowned by a cross that predates the reported apparitions, and the place that gives the finest view over the whole of Međugorje. For a visitor with the time and the legs it is the extension that completes a pilgrimage day; for one without, it is honestly the harder of the two hills and best treated as optional.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before you go

Access
A steep, long and exposed path with loose stone and little shade; the Way of the Cross is climbed in prayer. Wear sturdy shoes, carry water, and keep the climb to the morning or the late afternoon. Check current access locally.
Best Time
Mornings and late afternoons for the heat and the light; spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons. Avoid the midday sun in summer.
Context
Cross Mountain rises beyond Apparition Hill above the village; it is a separate, more demanding climb and best treated as an optional extension.
