ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE

Climbing Apparition Hill in the early morning is the way to take the principal hill of Međugorje at its quietest and its best. The path up Podbrdo is steep, rocky and exposed, and in the early hours it is cooler, less crowded and lit by the soft light that suits both prayer and photography. Pilgrims climb in silence, many barefoot, to the bronze relief of the Virgin that marks the reputed site of the first reported vision of June 1981, and the summit gives the view over the village, the church and the karst plain. The climb is short but demanding on loose stone, so sturdy shoes and water matter even in the cool of the morning.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Good to know before you go

A short but steep, rocky and exposed climb on loose stone with little shade. Pilgrims climb in silence; many climb barefoot as a personal devotion, but sturdy shoes are the safer choice. Carry water even in the morning, and allow time to pause at the bronze relief and the summit. The hill is a place of prayer — be respectful of pilgrims in devotion.
