ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Apparition Hill, known as Podbrdo, is the steep rocky hillside above the village of Međugorje where the reported apparitions of June 1981 are said to have begun. Pilgrims climb it in prayer along a rough path of stone and dust, and a bronze relief of the Virgin Mary marks the reputed site of the first reported vision. The climb is short but steep, rocky and exposed to the sun, and pilgrims traditionally climb it barefoot or in silence. It is the principal hill objective of a Međugorje visit — the place where the reported events that shaped the village are said to have started — and the view from the top takes in the village, the church and the karst plain of the Čitluk area. The exact coordinates of a single canonical visitor point are not independently verified here, so the hill is left unlocated on the map; the path begins a short walk behind the parish church.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

According to the accounts of the six children, the reported apparitions began on 24 June 1981 on the hillside of Podbrdo above the village, and the reported visions continued there and in other settings over the following years. The hillside became a place of prayer for the growing numbers of pilgrims who came to Međugorje, and a bronze relief of the Virgin Mary was placed at the reputed site of the first reported vision. The reported apparitions have been the subject of long Church investigation; in September 2024 the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith issued a Nihil obstat concerning the spiritual experience associated with Međugorje, permitting public devotion and recognising positive pastoral fruits without declaring the reported apparitions supernatural, authentic or obligatory belief.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Apparition Hill is the place where the reported events that made Međugorje what it is are said to have begun, and the principal hill objective of a visit. For a pilgrim it is the climb most closely tied to the reported apparitions; for any visitor it is the sight that connects the village below to the story above it.
