ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Saint James Church, dedicated to Saint James the Apostle, is the parish church of Međugorje and the centre of its pilgrimage life. The modern church and its surrounding complex — the outer altar, the confessionals, the adoration chapel and the meeting halls — host the masses, the evening programme of the sanctuary and the international gatherings that have made Međugorje one of the largest Catholic pilgrimage destinations in the world. The church is run by the local Franciscan parish, which became the centre of the devotion after the reported apparitions of 1981, and it is the practical and liturgical anchor of every pilgrimage day: the place where pilgrims gather, confess and attend the evening programme before or after climbing the hills. For a visitor it is the starting point and the gathering point of a visit, the fixed centre around which the Apparition Hill and Cross Mountain are arranged.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The parish of Saint James in Međugorje was established in 1892 and entrusted to the Franciscans, who serve it to this day. The present church was built in the late 1960s and early 1970s to replace an earlier parish church, and it became the centre of the devotion after June 1981, when six local children reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary on the hillside of Podbrdo above the village. The reported visions continued over the following years and drew growing numbers of pilgrims, and the Franciscan parish organised the liturgical life that grew around them — the evening programme, the adoration, the international masses. In 2019 the Holy See authorised official parish-organised pilgrimages to Međugorje, formalising a devotion that had been growing for nearly four decades; in September 2024 the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith issued a Nihil obstat concerning the spiritual experience, permitting public devotion and recognising positive pastoral fruits without declaring the reported apparitions supernatural, authentic or obligatory belief.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Saint James Church is the fixed centre of Međugorje — the place where the pilgrimage life is organised and the point from which the hills are visited. For a visitor it is the gathering point of a pilgrimage day and the liturgical counterpart to the climbs of Apparition Hill and Cross Mountain, the one sight that every visitor passes through regardless of how much of the hills they take on.
