ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The fortress and the looms tell Pirot’s two stories: the road town’s castle (14th century, Ottoman rebuild) above the Nišava, and the weaving workshops where the kilim tradition — geometric, reversible, UNESCO-listed — continues on the old looms. The workshops’ weavers explain the patterns; the fortress gives the town’s view.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The fortress guarded the Constantinople road from the 14th century (the Ottomans rebuilt it); the kilim tradition grew in the same centuries — the town’s women wove the rugs that bought the region’s fame. The weaving school (20th century) keeps the full pattern book; UNESCO’s intangible-heritage listing (and the national protection) secured the craft.

GOOD TO KNOW
Facts & Curiosities
The Pirot kilim is flat-woven and reversible — both faces are finished.
The patterns have names and meanings (“đulovi”, “korabljica”) — the weavers recite them like poems.
The kilim tradition is documented from the 17th century — likely far older.
The weaving school keeps the full tradition on the original looms — the looms still work daily.
