ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Pirot is the town of the kilim: the flat-woven rugs of the Pirot tradition — geometric, reversible, UNESCO-listed heritage — woven here since the Ottoman centuries and still made on the looms of the town’s workshops. The fortress above the Nišava keeps the road to Sofia’s story; the Jerma canyon to the south holds the Poganovo monastery and the region’s wildest rock; and the town’s tables keep the famous Pirot iron-pan baking (“pogačice”). It is the east’s crafts capital — an honest half-day, or a full one with the canyon.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

Pirot grew on the Constantinople road — the Ottoman-era town of weavers and caravans whose kilim tradition (documented from the 17th century, likely older) became the Balkans’ benchmark: the Pirot kilim’s patterns (the “đulovi”, the “korabljica”) are a named, protected heritage, and the looms of the town’s school keep the full tradition alive. The fortress (14th century, rebuilt by the Ottomans) guarded the road; the Jerma canyon’s Poganovo monastery (14th century) kept the valley’s faith. The Treaty of Berlin (1878) made it Serbian; the kilim made it famous.
