ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE

After walking the streets of Pompeii, the natural complement is to climb the volcano that buried it. Mount Vesuvius rises behind the site, and a road runs up its slopes to 1,000 metres, from where a path climbs to the crater rim. Standing on the rim and looking down into the steaming crater, then out over the bay to the city and the plain that the eruption of AD 79 covered, is the way to understand the scale of what happened at Pompeii. The volcano is still active — its last eruption was in 1944 — and the crater steams in places, a reminder that the disaster was not a one-off.
