ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The Batana Ecomuseum is a community heritage project built around the batana, the traditional flat-bottomed wooden fishing boat that is the symbol of Rovinj’s maritime culture. It links two separate locations on the waterfront: the House of Batana (Kuća o batani), an interpretation centre opened in 2004 inside a traditional harbour house, and Spacio Matika, a preserved local tavern and social space that became part of the ecomuseum in 2006. Together they present the boat, the fishing life and the social customs of Rovinj’s fishing community as living practices rather than as a static display.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The batana is a flat-bottomed wooden boat shaped for Rovinj’s shallow harbour and developed over centuries by the town’s fishing community, who built, repaired and sailed the boats themselves. The House of Batana opened in 2004 in a traditional waterfront house as an interpretation centre for the boat and its culture, and in 2006 the project expanded to include Spacio Matika, a preserved local tavern where fishermen once gathered, ate and sang. The ecomuseum interprets batana building, fishing traditions, the local Rovinj dialect, food and the bitinada — the characteristic multipart singing of the fishermen — as living community practices. In 2016 the project was selected for UNESCO’s Register of Good Safeguarding Practices, a recognition of safeguarding intangible cultural heritage. This concerns living traditions and must not be described as UNESCO World Heritage status for the museum, Rovinj or its Old Town.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

The Batana Ecomuseum is the clearest window onto the maritime culture that shaped Rovinj before it was a postcard — the boats, the fishing life and the songs of the harbour community. For a visitor it explains the town’s identity beyond its lanes and views, and the UNESCO recognition of the safeguarding project underlines why the tradition matters.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before you go

Access
The House of Batana and Spacio Matika are separate locations on the Rovinj waterfront, reached on foot from the old town and harbour.
Visiting
Opening times, guided programmes, boat-building demonstrations and Spacio events can be seasonal or reservation-dependent; check current arrangements directly before visiting.
Context
The ecomuseum presents living community heritage, not a single museum building. The 2016 UNESCO recognition concerns the safeguarding of intangible cultural practices and is not World Heritage status for Rovinj or its Old Town.
