ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Grisia (Ulica Grisia) is the steep stone street that climbs through Rovinj’s Old Town from the harbour area up toward the Church of St Euphemia, lined with small studios, galleries and craft shops. It is the town’s artists’ quarter, known for a long-running open-air art exhibition tradition that turns the lane into a gallery, and it is the main pedestrian route up through the historic core. Grisia is distinct from the wider Old Town: where the old town is a maze of lanes, Grisia is the single named street that concentrates the town’s artistic life.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Grisia follows the line of the old town’s main ascent from the harbour to the hilltop church, a route shaped when Rovinj was still a fortified island. As the town’s fishing economy changed, the old fishermen’s houses along the street were taken over by artists and craftspeople, and Grisia became Rovinj’s artists’ quarter. The street is best known for its open-air art exhibition, a long-running tradition in which artists display their work along the lane; the exhibition’s dates vary and must be checked locally.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Grisia is the artistic heart of Rovinj’s Old Town — the one street where the town’s creative life is concentrated, and the main route up to St Euphemia. For a visitor it is both a walk and a gallery, distinct from the wider maze of old-town lanes.
