ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Studenica is the dynasty’s spiritual manifesto in marble: Nemanja’s church of the Virgin (1183–96) on a walled plateau above the Studenica river, flanked by the kings’ church and St Nicholas. The Virgin’s frescoes of 1208–09 — with their deep lapis background — set the standard for Serbian medieval painting; the Crucifixion panel is a world masterpiece of pathos held in stillness. Nemanja, as the monk Simeon, is buried here; Sava wrote the monastery’s rule and here wrote the story of the dynasty’s founding.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Nemanja endowed Studenica around 1190 and, abdicating as monk Simeon, was buried here in 1199 — his relics’ translation (by Sava, 1207) made the monastery the dynasty’s holy place and the seed of the Serbian church’s cult. The frescoes of 1208–09 were painted by the best Byzantine artists of the generation. Through the Ottoman era the monastery waned; the 19th-century restorations and the 20th-century scholarship returned its standing. UNESCO inscribed Studenica in 1986 — Serbia’s first monastery on the list.
