The Valley of the Kings drive — Maglič & the Ibar forts
The Ibar road between Kraljevo and Studenica strings medieval forts along the gorge — Maglič above all — the “Valley of the Kings” that guarded the coronation road.

History & Heritage
Two monasteries that made a kingdom — Nemanja’s white-marble UNESCO endowment and the coronation church of the Serbian kings.
In the hills above the Ibar valley stand two monasteries between which medieval Serbia was made. Studenica (from 1190) is Stefan Nemanja’s endowment — the white-marble church of the Virgin whose frescoes (1208–09, the Crucifixion above all) are among the supreme paintings of the European Middle Ages, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Žiča (from the 1210s), an hour north on the Ibar, is the archbishopric’s coronation church — built by Nemanja’s son, king Stephen the First-Crowned, where every Serbian medieval king was anointed “on the red hill”. Between them runs the Valley of the Kings — medieval forts along the Ibar — and the spa town of Vrnjačka Banja for the evening.

HISTORY & CULTURE
Stefan Nemanja, the founder of the Nemanjić dynasty, endowed Studenica in 1190 after his abdication; his son, Sava of Serbia, wrote its kateheton and organized the monastery as the dynasty’s spiritual heart. The church of the Virgin (1183–96) — white Venčac marble — was painted in 1208–09; its blue-tinged “Studenica blue” background (lapis imported from Afghanistan) makes the Crucifixion one of the most analyzed paintings in Europe. Žiča was built 1206–17 by Stefan the First-Crowned and archbishop Sava as the seat of the new Serbian archbishopric (1219); here Serbian kings were crowned — the rite reserved to Žiča gave the saying that no king could be anointed elsewhere. Both monasteries were damaged through the Ottoman centuries and restored in the 20th; Studenica was inscribed by UNESCO in 1986.

ITINERARIES
PLAN YOUR VISIT
From Belgrade, 2.5–3 h (Ibar highway via Kraljevo). From Kraljevo: Žiča 20 min, Studenica another hour south on the Ibar road. Best by car.
Modest dress (long trousers/skirts, covered shoulders), headscarf for women at Žiča; comfortable shoes; cash for candles and lodging donations.
Both monastery yards are step-free; the roads are paved but the Ibar valley route is winding — allow time.
