Zastava & the industrial heritage
The story of Yugoslavia’s Detroit — the foundry of 1853 that became Zastava: rifles, Fića, Yugo and the 1999 bombing — told in the museum and the plant’s shell.

History & Heritage
The first capital of modern Serbia — a factory city with a memorial heart, where the state’s first everything was built.
Kragujevac was the capital of the new Serbia from 1818 to 1841 — the town where the state built its first court, first gymnasium, first theatre, first pharmacy and its first artillery foundry, the technical seed of everything that followed. That foundry grew into Zastava, the industrial giant whose cars and rifles carried Yugoslavia through the 20th century. But Kragujevac is also the town of Šumarice: on 21 October 1941, German troops executed some 2,800 citizens — among them an entire class of high-school boys — in one of the war’s defining massacres, remembered today in one of Europe’s most moving memorial parks. Between the two stories lies a real, working city with a riverside heart and Šumadija’s best sense of itself.

HISTORY & CULTURE
Miloš Obrenović made Kragujevac the capital in 1818; the state’s institutions were born here — the Lyceum (1838, the future University of Belgrade), the first court, the first newspaper (Novine srbske, 1816), the first theatre (1835, the Joakim Vujić stage) and the cannon foundry of 1853. The foundry became Zastava after 1884: rifles, then cars — the Fiat-based Zastava 750 “Fića” and later the Yugo, exported to the USA. On 21 October 1941, as reprisal for partisan losses, the Wehrmacht executed ~2,800 men and boys at Šumarice — the massacre entered world poetry through “Krvava bajka” (Desanka Maksimović). After WWII Zastava made the city Yugoslavia’s Detroit; the 1999 NATO bombing destroyed its assembly lines. Today the city trades industry for memory and universities.
