Oplenac wine tasting
The vineyards around the royal hill — Prokupac, Tamjanika and the interwar Oplenac blends — poured in family cellars 10 minutes from the mausoleum.
History & Heritage
The birthplace of modern Serbia — Karađorđe’s hill town and the mosaic mausoleum of the Karađorđević dynasty on Oplenac.
Topola is where Serbia begins its modern story: in 1804, at this Šumadija crossroads, Karađorđe Petrović raised the First Serbian Uprising against the Ottomans and made the town the capital of the rebel state. On the hill of Oplenac above it, his descendants built their answer — St George’s Church (1912), the dynasty’s mausoleum, its whole interior covered in 40 million mosaic tesserae after the plans of the best artists of the era, and the crypt where the Karađorđević line rests. Around them, the town keeps Karađorđe’s tower and wine cellars, the Peter’s House museum, and the vineyards that made Oplenac wine famous between the wars.

HISTORY & CULTURE
Karađorđe led the uprising from Topola between 1804 and 1813, building the town as his seat — the “Topola revolutionary capital” of the First Serbian Uprising. After the Obrenović interlude and the return of the Karađorđević dynasty in 1903, king Peter I chose Oplenac as the dynasty’s foundation: the church of St George was built 1910–12 over the site of an older church. King Alexander I completed the mosaic decoration in the 1930s; the crypt holds the tombs of the dynasty — including, controversially, the reburied remains of Peter II of Yugoslavia, returned from Libertyville in 2013. In WWII the complex was damaged; restored after the war as a museum, it remains the dynasty’s spiritual home and one of Serbia’s most visited monuments.

PLAN YOUR VISIT
Topola is 70 km south of Belgrade — about an hour by car via the Ibar highway (exit Lazarevac/Topola). Buses run from Belgrade’s lasta station. The hill of Oplenac is a 10-minute walk from the town centre.
Modest dress for the church (covered shoulders), comfortable shoes for the hill, and cash for the museum tickets.
The church and crypt are step-free; the hill approach is a gentle paved ramp.
