ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
Touring Rastuša Cave is the adventure and deep-history experience of a Teslić trip. The cave lies in the village of Rastuša, about twelve kilometres north-west of the town, and a visit goes into a speleological site known for two things: the unusual “tiger-stripe” or “leopard-skin” mineral patterns on its walls — a natural deposit confirmed in only three European caves — and the archaeological evidence of a deep human and animal past. Research has uncovered the remains of cave bears, a Pleistocene wolf, a rhinoceros, beaver, cave lion and elk, alongside Mousterian flint tools associated with Neanderthals and the traces of hearths. For a visitor it is the one experience that takes a Teslić visit back to the Ice Age, into a cave that holds both a rare natural decoration and a distant human story.

HIGHLIGHTS
Moments worth savouring
The “tiger-stripe” wall patterns — the natural mineral deposits on the cave walls, a phenomenon confirmed in only three European caves.
The cave-bear and Ice Age animal remains — the fossils of cave bears, a Pleistocene wolf, rhinoceros, beaver, cave lion and elk.
The Neanderthal stone tools and hearths — the Mousterian flint artefacts and the traces of hearths that record a prehistoric human presence.
The later finds — the Celtic pottery and the remains of an ancient iron smelter that show the area’s later importance.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
Rastuša is a protected archaeological site and access is by arrangement — check before visiting and expect a guided visit, likely with protective equipment such as a helmet. The cave is cool inside year-round, so bring a warm layer and wear shoes with grip. A car or arranged transport is the practical way to reach the cave, about 12 km north-west of Teslić. The “tiger-stripe” patterns are natural mineral deposits — a cave formation, not human-made art — and no rock art is claimed for the site. Allow a focused half-day including the drive and the guided visit. No fixed opening hours, prices or tour schedules are stated here; arrange access in advance.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The Rastuša visit is the experience that gives a Teslić trip its deepest time-depth — a cave where a rare natural decoration meets the remains of Ice Age animals and Neanderthal hunters, a reminder that the area was lived in long before the modern town.
