ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Liplje is a Serbian Orthodox monastery in the municipality of Teslić, standing at the widest part of a narrow gorge through which the little river Bistrica flows. It is a quiet, secluded place — a church and monastic buildings set in the wooded gorge — and the oldest spiritual site in the Teslić area. The monastery is dedicated to the Annunciation, a dedication it took on in the nineteenth century; it was formerly dedicated to St Nicholas. For a visitor it is the heritage layer of a Teslić trip that lies beyond the town and the spa: a short drive into the valley to a monastery whose documented history reaches back to the late sixteenth century and whose life has been broken and renewed more than once.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The certain earliest recorded mention of Liplje Monastery dates to 1576. There were indications that it was named in a chronicle, the Dobrun pomnik, from the end of the fifteenth century, but that document burned in the Belgrade library during the bombing of the city at the start of the Second World War, so its authenticity can no longer be determined. The 1576 record is therefore the secure date, not a founding date: the monastery was likely older than its first mention. During the seventeenth century the monks of Liplje were active in transcribing religious books. At some point in the Great Turkish War of 1683–1699 the monastery was burned down by the Ottomans; the surviving monks fled north across the Sava and found refuge in the Orahovica Monastery in Slavonia, carrying a number of their manuscript books into the Orahovica library. Unlike the nearby Stuplje Monastery, Liplje was not razed to the ground: its church was partially repaired so that it could serve as the parish church for the surrounding area. After the Ottoman authorities permitted it, the church was restored between 1867 and 1879, largely funded by donations from the Serb population of the area. A bell tower was added at its western side in 1922. Almost three hundred years after the monastic community had ceased, Liplje was re-established as a monastery in 1965 and renovated in the 1980s, when the bell tower was removed.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The church — the Raška-school monastery church, restored in the nineteenth century on the older foundations, formerly dedicated to St Nicholas and now to the Annunciation.
The Bistrica gorge — the narrow wooded gorge at whose widest point the monastery stands, the secluded natural setting of the visit.
The monastic buildings and peace — the quiet enclosure of a working monastery, a contrast to the town and the spa.
The layered history — a site first recorded in 1576, burned in the Great Turkish War, restored 1867–1879 and re-established in 1965.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Liplje is the oldest documented spiritual site in the Teslić area and the heritage counterpoint to the spa and the mountain. For a visitor it is the place where the deeper, quieter history of the valley is read — a monastery whose life has been broken and renewed across four centuries.
