ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Rastuša is a cave in the village of the same name, about twelve kilometres north-west of Teslić, and it is both a natural and an archaeological site. What sets it apart visually are the unusual patterns on its rock walls, which speleologists call “tiger stripes” or “leopard skin” — mineral deposits that cover large areas of the walls in a pattern unlike almost anything else in European caves; the phenomenon is confirmed in only three caves on the continent, besides Rastuša in one cave near Paris and one near Vicenza in Italy. The cave’s deeper value is archaeological: research has uncovered the remains of cave bears and other Ice Age animals alongside stone tools, evidence that these halls were once shared by prehistoric hunters and extinct beasts. For a visitor it is the adventure and deep-history layer of a Teslić trip — a single focused visit into a cave that holds both a rare natural decoration and a distant human past.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Research at Rastuša has shown that its halls were once shared by Palaeolithic hunters and extinct beasts. The remains of a cave bear and a Pleistocene wolf were found, along with primitive stone tools and traces of hearths; a team from the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the University of Cambridge, on a three-year field study, also found the remains of a rhinoceros — an unexpected find for the area — as well as beaver, cave lion and elk alongside the cave bears. The flint artefacts correspond to the Mousterian culture, associated with Neanderthals. Finds of Celtic pottery and the remains of an ancient iron smelter show that the area was a centre later on as well. The “tiger-stripe” patterns on the walls are natural mineral deposits — a cave formation, not human-made art — and no rock art is claimed for Rastuša. Access to the cave is by arrangement, as it is a protected archaeological site.

04

The later finds — the Celtic pottery and the remains of an ancient iron smelter that show the area’s later importance.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Rastuša is the deep-history layer of a Teslić trip — a cave where a rare natural decoration meets a distant human and animal past. For a visitor it is the one site that takes a Teslić visit back to the Ice Age, and a reminder that the area was lived in long before the modern town.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION
