ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Trogir’s old town is the whole island — a compact walled settlement of stone lanes, Romanesque and Renaissance palaces and the cathedral square, with the Kamerlengo fortress at its harbour end and the bridge to the mainland at the other. It is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in the Mediterranean, inscribed by UNESCO in 1997, and it can be walked end to end in half an hour, which makes it the perfect half-day trip from Split.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Trogir was a Greek and then Roman settlement that grew into a medieval commune under Venice, and its old town preserves a continuous sequence of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance buildings within its walls — the reason for the UNESCO listing. The Kamerlengo fortress at the harbour end was built by the Venetians in the 15th century, and the town’s stone palaces were the houses of the medieval and Renaissance nobility. The island was joined to the mainland by a bridge and to Čiovo by another, making it a turning point of the coast.
