Raft the Cetina Gorge
Raft the rapids of the Cetina through the gorge above Omiš — the most popular river trip in Central Dalmatia.

Omiš is a small town at the mouth of the Cetina river, where a steep limestone gorge opens onto the sea between Split and Makarska. It was the base of the medieval Omiš pirates, and its old town of stone lanes sits beneath the fortress of Mirabella, while the Cetina gorge above it is the centre for rafting, canyoning and zip-lining in Central Dalmatia — a town that pairs a pirate history with a full menu of river and canyon adventure.

HISTORY & CULTURE
Omiš was the base of the medieval Kačić pirates, who used the Cetina gorge as a refuge and harried Venetian shipping for centuries until Venice subdued the town in the 15th century. The Mirabella fortress above the old town dates from that era, and the gorge that protected the pirates now draws adventure travellers — the same defensible canyon that made the town a pirate base now makes it a rafting and canyoning centre.

NATURE & WILDLIFE
Omiš’s nature is the Cetina gorge. The river cuts a steep limestone canyon inland from the town, with the clear, cold Cetina running through it and the Gubavica waterfall and the river pools upstream. The gorge holds the river fish, the crabs and the birds of the karst river, and the cliffs above are home to the raptors and the lizards of the Dalmatian karst. The coast on either side of the river mouth holds the pebble beaches and the pine coves of the Central Dalmatian shore, and the Biokovo mountain rises to the southeast toward Makarska.
PLAN YOUR VISIT
Omiš is 30 minutes south of Split by car or bus on the coastal road, and about 1 hour north of Makarska. The nearest airport is Split. Buses run along the coast from Split and Makarska.
The old town is walkable; the gorge activities are run by operators in town who provide transport to the start points. A car is useful for the river beaches upstream.
One day covers the old town, the fortress and a gorge activity. Two days add canyoning or zip-lining and the coast beaches.
May–June and September for the gorge activities and comfortable temperatures; July and August for swimming, though the gorge is busiest.
