ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The patriarchal basilica is Aquileia — a Romanesque church of severe striped brick and stone, raised between the 11th and 14th centuries over a 4th-century predecessor, whose whole floor is a window into the earliest age of Christianity. You walk a glass-and-steel walkway a metre above a mosaic carpet that once covered the entire Theodorian hall: Jonahaswallowed by the sea monster, the fisherman with his catch, the cock fighting the tortoise (light against darkness), a sea full of octopus and ducks from the Adriatic a few miles away, and the portrait roundels of the local families who funded the building — among them, possibly, the family of Constantine the Great.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The first basilica was raised immediately after Constantine ended the persecutions, by Bishop Theodorus, on a mosaic floor laid around 314 AD — the oldest surviving large-scale Christian mosaic anywhere. Theodorus’s hall was itself the fourth church on the site; the present Romanesque building rose after an earthquake in 988 and was embellished in the Gothic age. When Attila burned Aquileia in 452 the fire damaged the basilica but the floor, buried under later paving, survived intact — its columns still show scorch marks. The 12th-century fresco cycle in the crypt below the apse tells the lives of Saint Mark and Saint Hermagoras, the city’s first bishop and martyr.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The 760 m² mosaic floor — Jonah, the fishermen, the cock-and-tortoise, the donor portraits.
The Crypt of the Frescoes — vivid 12th-century murals of Saints Mark and Hermagoras.
The Crypt of the Excavations — the Theodorian church below, with more mosaics and a Roman villa.
The bell tower climb for the view over the ruins and the Friulian plain toward the Alps.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
This is the single most important early-Christian monument in the western Roman world — the floor that made Aquileia the mother church of the Adriatic and the springboard from which Christianity spread into central Europe.
