ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Between the mountains Ovčar and Kablar the Zapadna Morava cuts one of Serbia’s holiest landscapes: a short gorge strung with ten monasteries — the “Serbian Athos” — among them Sretenje and Blagoveštenje, living communities below the cliffs. Čačak, the region’s town at the gorge’s mouth, keeps a Roman bath, a 12th-century church and the big-city energy of western Serbia; the hot springs of Ovčar Banja at the gorge’s entry make the monasteries’ walks end in thermal pools.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

The gorge’s monasteries were founded 14th–17th centuries (legend counts ten, the “Serbian Athos” of the desert fathers); Sretenje (c. 1290s, rebuilt 1818) is the nuns’ community and the gorge’s spiritual centre; Blagoveštenje (1602) keeps the kruška-tree legend. Čačak grew from the Roman bath (the “Thermae” of the 4th-century coins) and the 12th-century church of the Ascension — the region’s administrative town through the Ottoman and modern eras, its airport (Morava-Lađevci) now the West’s gateway.
