ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Vrnjačka Banja is Serbia’s grandest spa: seven mineral springs (four bottled and drunk), a belle-époque park laid out when the Serbian royals summered here, and the Bridge of Love — hung with thousands of padlocks since the legend of a lost war love. The waters (Topla voda, the warm one, at 36°C) draw the drinkers and the bathers; Mount Goč above offers the forest walks; and the town’s promenade keeps the interwar elegance that gave it the “queen of spas” name. It pairs perfectly with Žiča and Studenica.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

The springs were known to the Romans (the “aqua” of the coins found here) and the medieval court at Žiča; the modern spa began in 1833–34, when the state took the waters under prince Miloš. The belle-époque park and the villas date to the royal summers of the 1880s–1930s — the era that gave the town its promenade style and the “queen of spas” name. The Bridge of Love’s padlocks grew from the WWI legend of Nada and Relja (the Serbian Answer to the Vrnjačka river’s own Romeo and Juliet) and now hold tens of thousands of locks.
