Kladovo & the Danube beaches
The Danube’s Serbian seaside — the Kladovo beaches, the river’s widest stretch, and the Trajan’s bridge remains across the water.
Nature & History
The Iron Gates — Europe’s greatest river gorge, Lepenski Vir’s 9,000-year-old art, and the Danube at its most dramatic.
The Đerdap is where the Danube becomes myth: the river cuts the Iron Gates gorge between the Carpathians and the Balkan mountains — the longest and deepest river gorge in Europe (the Kazan narrows to 150 m between 800-m cliffs) — through a national park of old forests and cliff-top views. Along it lie the great sites of the deep past: Lepenski Vir, the 9,000-year-old settlement whose stone sculptures are among Europe’s oldest art; Golubac, the fairy-tale fortress at the gorge’s mouth; Trajan’s tablet carved in the rock; and the Iron Gates dam’s quiet lake behind. It is Serbia’s river epic — two days minimum, three better.

HISTORY & CULTURE
The gorge has held the river’s history for millennia: Lepenski Vir (from ~9500 BP) is among Europe’s oldest permanent settlements — its trapezoid houses and stone boulder sculptures (the “fish-gods”) are among the continent’s oldest monumental art. Rome ran its Danube frontier here — Trajan’s engineers cut the road into the cliffs (the Tabula Traiana memorial tablet of 100–103 survives, re-sited above the water), and the empire’s bridge at Drobeta was the world’s longest for a millennium. The medieval Golubac fortress (14th c.) guarded the gorge’s mouth; the modern Iron Gates dam (1972) tamed the river and raised the waters over much of the old road.

ITINERARIES
PLAN YOUR VISIT
From Belgrade 2–2.5 h to Golubac (A1 then the Đerdap road); the gorge road (the “Đerdap magistrala”) threads the whole park Golubac → Kladovo. The closest rail is Požarevac; buses run the river towns.
Walking shoes for the viewpoints, swimwear in summer (the Danube’s beaches at Kladovo), and binoculars — the park’s eagles and cormorants show.
The gorge road makes most viewpoints car-accessible; Lepenski Vir has parking and a walkway; the fortress is step-free at the lower level.
