ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Požega is the small town at the Western Morava’s head: the “Veseli kućeri” (cheerful hills) around it, the old Belgrade–Bar railway’s junction, and Serbia’s raspberry heartland — the golden fruit that made the region’s farms famous. The town keeps a 19th-century core, the railway’s history and the region’s warmest welcome; the hills above hold the villages and the walks. It is the road town between Užice, Čačak and Valjevo — and its own quiet reward.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

Požega grew at the Morava head as the Ottoman-era market town; the 19th century made it the district centre and the railway junction (the Belgrade–Bar line’s construction, 1950s–70s, ran through its hills — the tunnels and viaducts are the region’s engineering story). The raspberry farms (post-1960s) made the “Veseli kućeri” hills Serbia’s fruit basket — the frozen-fruit export capital.
