ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Rilke Trail is short enough to walk before lunch and beautiful enough to be the reason for the trip: a footpath cut along the very lip of the limestone cliffs through the Duino Cliffs Regional Nature Reserve, from the bay of Sistiana to the castle village, with the sea thirty metres below and parapets at the exposed turns. Pines and karst scrub lean over the path; old military tunnels and lookouts from two wars punctuate it; and interpretation boards mark the spot where Rilke, walking in the winter of 1912, first heard the opening lines of his Elegies.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The path follows an old guard route along the cliffs; it takes its name from the winter Rilke spent at the castle as Princess Marie of Thurn und Taxis’s guest, walking here daily before the voice of the first Elegy broke his silence (“Who, if I cried out, would hear me among the hierarchies of angels?”). The trail was restored and named for him in 1987, and it now doubles as a stage of the Alpe-Adria Trail and the Carsus Trail.
