ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The castle crowns the town like a lid — walls built up from the 13th-century Zenebishi citadel, expanded by Ali Pasha around 1811, covering the whole summit above the slate roofs. Inside are Ottoman cannon lines, a clock-tower viewpoint over the Drino valley, the National Folk Festival stage where Albania’s iso-polyphony gathers every five years — and the surreal wreck of an American B-24 Liberator, forced down over the town in 1944 and dragged up here as a Cold War trophy exhibit. The armored view over the tiered stone houses is the UNESCO postcard at its best.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

A fortification stood here in classical times; the medieval castle grew under the 14th-century Zenebishi lords and the Ottoman sanjak governors after 1417. Ali Pasha of Ioannina rebuilt the walls around 1811 after the town’s revolt, adding the clock tower; a lightning strike burned it in 1933 and the current tower was rebuilt by the Communist state. The B-24 “Lady Be Good”-era bomber (a different aircraft, shot down December 1944) was displayed as anti-American propaganda; the stage was built in the 1960s for the National Folk Festival, which UNESCO-listed iso-polyphony has anchored since.
