ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Apollonia was one of the great cities of the classical Adriatic — a Corinthian-and-Corcyran colony of 588 BC on a hill above the Myzeqe plain, rich from the slave and bitumen trade, a mint city whose coins reached every Greek market, and the university town where the young Octavian heard his philosophy when the news of Caesar’s murder reached him. Earthquakes and the shifted Vjosa buried it; excavations from 1918 raised a park of marble monuments among cypresses — the Agonothetes monument, the bouleuterion, the nymphaeum — with the Onufri-era monastery museum holding its statues. Fier, the plain’s lively city, is the base: oil-country industry, the Ardenica monastery, the Vjosa wild river and the Adriatic beaches within reach.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

Founded 588 BC by colonists from Corinth and Corcyra, Apollonia (named for the god) grew rich on trade with the Illyrian interior and on the bitumen springs that sealed its ships. It sided with Rome early, minted its own coinage, and in the 1st century BC held a famous school of philosophy and rhetoric — the young Octavian (later Augustus) was studying there in 44 BC when Caesar’s assassination news arrived, and Cicero called it “magna urbs et gravis”. An earthquake in the 3rd century AD shifted the Vjosa’s course, silted its harbour and ended the city’s life; Byzantine and Ottoman centuries left the hill to the 13th-century St Mary monastery. Austrian archaeologists began excavations in 1918; the site is on Albania’s UNESCO tentative list.
