ABOUT THIS ITINERARY

Grado rewards a structured day: the car-free old town and the two basilicas before the heat, the lagoon boat through the casoni at midday, the beach at the sun’s peak, and the flat evening ride across to Aquileia — the dead imperial city that this town was born from — as the light goes gold over the fields.

OVERVIEW

The route at a glance

The itinerary runs the island’s story in order: refuge, church, lagoon, beach, and finally the mother city across the water — with every leg either a walk or a flat bike ride.

THE SCHEDULE

Day by day

Day 1

Basilicas, lagoon, beach and the ride to Aquileia

  1. Morning

Grado Vecchia — Campo dei Patriarchi and Sant’Eufemia

    1.5–2 hours

The car-free lanes of the castrum, the two 6th-century basilicas with their mosaic floors, the baptistery and lapidary — early Christianity as a living townscape.

  2. Midday

Lagoon boat to the casoni and Banco d’Orio

    2 hours

Board at the Canal della Schiusa for the tidal channels — the thatched stilt houses, the herons, and a swim off the wild golden sandbar.

  3. Afternoon

Beach — Costa Azzurra or the GIT main beach

    2–3 hours

The south-facing golden sand that never shades: shallow, warm, child-safe water with the old town two minutes away.

  4. Late afternoon

Cycle to Aquileia for golden hour

    2–2.5 hours

The flat Alpe-Adria cycle path northwest across the lagoon margin to Aquileia — the basilica mosaics and the Roman port in evening light, dinner in the village, ride back under the stars.
