ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Grado Vecchia is the whole reason to linger: a compact island quarter of car-free lanes following the Roman castrum’s grid, past fishermen’s houses painted in faded ochre and green, to Campo dei Patriarchi — the square that was the forecourt of Western Christianity for eight hundred years. Here stand the basilica of Sant’Eufemia and, beside it, Santa Maria delle Grazie with its two-level mosaic floor showing the two construction phases of the 5th and 6th centuries, the octagonal baptistery and the lapidarium of carved fragments — the most complete early-Christian ensemble in Italy after Rome and Ravenna.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
When Aquileia burned in 452, its patriarch took the relics, the treasury and the title across the lagoon to the fortified island his flock already used as a refuge. Grado was consecrated as the new see — Elias’s great basilica of Sant’Eufemia rose in 579 — and for the next eight centuries the “daughter of Aquileia” outranked every town on this coast, minting coins and crowning the faith of the upper Adriatic, until Venice wrestled the patriarchate away in the 15th century and Grado sank back into being a fishing village on its own magnificent ruins.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
This is early Christianity as a living townscape rather than a museum — the refuge city that kept the flame while the empire’s cities burned, in a village you can cross on foot in ten minutes.
